Whiskeytown: Pneumonia

"Before Ryan Adams, there was still, well, Ryan Adams. He was just fronting a band called Whiskeytown. They've continued to record and are still talking about making another album. But, of the four they've done so far, their latest, Pneumonia (2001), reigns supreme."
Janelle MonÃe

"Her music is futuristic, soulful, and jazzy. Experimental seems to be the genre of her music, however, it doesn't need a label- it's an artistic creation of greatness!"
Hum - You'd Prefer an Astronaut - Stars
1 recommendation
"An undeniably strange song. It starts off atmospheric and soft, but then the fuzzy guitars kick in and we're in business. It's an odd tale, I won't deny it, but there's something in the hook that keeps me coming back to it."
So Much for the Afterglow: Everclear
1 recommendation
"They weren't a "One Hit Wonder", but this album did prove to be their strongest. The songs are catchy and the guitars are really strong. "El Distorto De Melodica" could be as distorted and heavy as anything off of the Matrix soundtrack, while "I Will Buy You A New Life" was a great, modern rock, mainstream hit. A terrific 90 album."
Yourself or Someone Like You: Matchbox Twenty
1 recommendation
"I have such fond memories of this album. We'd play it all the time, and there's such a range to the songs, musically. "3am" and "Push" were big alt rock hits at the time, but "Long Day", and "Girl Like That" share the same hooky guitars and infectious song structure. The rest of the album is great too though. "Busted" opens with a blistering riff and keeps going. "Hang" ends it on a more mell..."
Sunburn: Fuel
1 recommendation
"As far as catchy, angry songs go, Fuel is pretty good. They have a raw edge and that agressive vocal style, but some of the melodies are downright catchy. "Shimmer" is almost pretty before the hard stuff kicks in. The guitar work is solid, and the energy is good. Key tracks: "Bittersweet", "Shimmer", "Sunburn""
Soul Asylum - Grave Dancers Union
1 recommendation
"As far as 90s alt rock goes, this was a good album. Soul Asylum never could match the solid tunes or success of this album. Key track: "Runaway Train""
Stone Temple Pilots (Purple): Stone Temple Pilots

"Yes, I was a child who came musically of age in the 90s. So it's not surprising to see STPs second album is a favorite of mine. The incredibly catchy and radio friendly "Interstate Love song" sits somewhat centrally, which is appropriate as the album ventured between heavy guitars in songs like "Vasoline" and still powerful, but mainstream songs like "Big Empty"."
Throwing Copper: Live

"This album was a staple of my teenage years. There's dramatic guitar fills and the vocal delivery has enough punch and aggression to match up to my teen angst. But it manages to hold up over time. There are some well crafted songs in here. "I Alone" is dark but catchy, s is "Selling the Drama". "Lightening Crashes" is a good song, if you can get past the over-exposure that almost ruins it for..."
Vs. : Pearl Jam
1 recommendation
"Pearl Jam's second album builds on their solid grunge backbone but takes it a step closer to mainstream domination. "Daughter" was a massive hit, but it also takes the dirty guitars out in favor of a more stripped down sound. "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town" is almost entirely acoustic and is a much softer in tone. There's still killer songs like "Dissident" which sound much l..."
Ritual de lo Habitual: Jane's Addiction
1 recommendation
"The second Jane's Addicition album saw them build on their great alt-rock songs and screaming-sung vocals to deliver a sophomore album to match their great debut. Sadly, this would be the last album from these guys as a whole."
Nothing's Shocking: Jane's Addiction
1 recommendation
"Jane's Addiction were such a great alt-rock band. Neither Perry Farrel, nor Dave Navaro have been quite able to match what they did together here and on Ritual de lo Habitual since since. Essential track "Jane Says"."
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness: Smashing Pumpkins

"this cd brought cliques together at my high school -- everybody loved it."
Accelerate: R.E.M.
1 recommendation
"They're ba-ack. After the disappointing "Around the Sun" I was slightly leery of Accelerate, not getting my hopes too high. But all the plaudits from the magazines are well deserved. This is a rockin' album, full of energy and driving songs. They might not have quite recaptured their youth, but they're revitalized and kicking out some great tunes"
Bottoms of Barrels

"tilly and the wall blend gorgeous '60s pop sensibilities with pure americana. super-cute, fun and danceable. speaking of which, their percussion is provided by a tap dancer. don't tell me that doesn't make put a little skip in yr step."
23: Blonde Redhead

"On "23" Blonde Redhead stretches out into sonic power mode, taking full advantage of vocal and production range and thus redefining the Blond Redhead brand. Nice playful cover design eh?"
Anthony Kiedis - Scar Tissue

"Before I get into my description let me say this; I HATE TODAY'S RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS! Seriously folks, soft alternative rock is not my thing at all. But once upon a time (try Blood Sugar Sex Majik and before) these guys used to take a lot of drugs and play some of the funkiest punkiest music known to man. I like this book because it documents that time really well, especially since that time in ..."
Something Like Human: Fuel
1 recommendation
""Hemorrhage (In My Hands)" was a moderate alt rock hit for Fuel. It seems them continue to put out angry, but catchy songs that are good for thwn you're really pissed off, but want to rage to something with more complex melodies than your average alt rock. "Last Time" is another agressive song, but "Bad Day" has a slower feel to it."
