Cheating at Solitaire: Mike Ness
1 recommendation
"Mike Ness, frontman of SoCal punk outfit Social D, goes solo to record some of his more country and straight-up rock and roll songs. Definitely has a more old-time feel than a Social D record, and certainly a different kind of energy. It's a kinder, gentler Mike Ness. Key track "The Devil in Miss Jones""
Mainliner: Wreckage From the Past: Social Distortion

"Mostly contains demos and alternate versions of songs, it also includes the songs off of the single they released prior to Mommy's Little Monster. Definitely in more of the hardcore vein than their country/punk sound."
Prison Bound: Social Distortion

"Social D's second album finds them kicking out some more good punk, but starting down the road of cowpunk or country punk, introducing some more honky tonk elements into the songs, notably on the album's title track"
Mommy's Little Monster: Social Distortion

"Debut album from Social D, this is a kicking punk album with attitude to spare. Tons of aggressive guitars, with lots of energy and swagger. Key tracks: "The Creeps" and "Mommy's Little Monster" (although for my money, the version off of Live at the Roxy manages to pack in even more energy and bravado)"
White Light, White Heat, White Trash: Social Distortion

"Referencing, and possibly poking fun of, the Velvet Underground in the title, this Social D album returns to a harder, more punk sound. For me, the best song is "Dear Lover", and the strange, hardcore cover of the Rolling Stones' "Under My Thumb""
Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll: Social Distortion

"The latest offering from Social D sees them putting out more of the crankin' country punk that we love them for. Possibly a touch closer to straight rock'n'roll than previous efforts, they've lost none of their energy with age though. Very solid offering with plenty of catchy songs. Good album for driving around with the top down on a summer day."

"The third album from OC punk pioneers sees them cranking out more good Clash via Johnny Cash tunes. And speaking of Cash, there's a cover of "Ring of Fire" on here. Personal favorites "Sick Boy", "Story of My Life" (yes, that would be one of my ringtones), and "Ball & Chain". Tons of raw energy here. I always find Social D to be good when I need to get pumped up."
Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell: Social Distortion

"This is the first Social D record I ever heard. From the opening strains of "Cold Feelings" I was hooked. Terrifically energetic punk, infused with a Johnny Cash sensibility. Some good things did come out of the 80s. (Bruce Springsteen said this was his favorite album of the year btw)"
Live at the Roxy: Social Distortion

"It's pretty rare for me to replace the album cut of a song with a live one on my playlists, but the live version of "Mommy's Little Monster" is definitely the best version of this song committed to tape, in my opinion. This album is full of great live gems, and a terrific album to get you going. Amazing energy and a lot of fun."
