"I've seen this movie and read this book a ton. I love watching/reading it - the story is beautifully told and captivating. While it's focused on a Chinese family, I still identify with the Asian-American aspect of it."
A Step From Heaven: An Na
1 recommendation
"I'll never know what my mom really went through to come over to the U.S. from Korea but this book details some experiences other Koreans have/could have. The story is told from the viewpoint of a young child and many of the terms/concepts referenced are familiar to me (mi gook=america/american, Young Ju is actually my cousin's name, halmoni=grandma) but I'm sure I'll learn more form this book."
The Accidental Asian: Notes of a Native Speaker: Eric Liu
1 recommendation
"This was actually a book for a friend's class that accidentally picked up (how fitting) and skimmed. As I skimmed, I realized this was something interesting and that this author had managed to put into [eloquent] words how I had felt and thought about various aspects of my life. Overall, it pushed/opened the doors to thinking about what being hapa really means (to which, of course, I still don't..."

Joli Jewelry Pineapple Earrings
1 recommendation
"i found these on a site called Hapa Culture which is all about promoting and celebrating hapa creations. These adorable fun earrings are a take on pineapples which represent the hospitality of the Hawaiian islands and good fortune in Asia."
Racially Mixed People in America: Maria P. P. Root
1 recommendation
"Here's another educationally-based book that focuses on 'racial ecology,' in particular, mixed ethnicities. This may be a bit yawn at sometime but there are some incredibly well-developed ideas here that can be both interesting and though-provoking."
'Mixed Race' Studies: A Reader: J. Ifekwunigwe: Books
1 recommendation
"This reader is much more from the higher education analysis standpoint than experience-based. A reader is a collection of various articles generally put together by a professor for a specific course. I still have one of my geography readers so they definitely have some value beyond the classroom as this one does. While not solely focused on hapa culture, the concept of 'mixed race' still applie..."
The Sum of Our Parts: Mixed-Heritage Asian Americans (Asian American History and Culture): Teresa Williams-Leon, Cyn
1 recommendation
"This book is both a factual and experience-based book. It takes census population data and analyzes it as well as having excerpts by various people. This is a different approach from other books that are mainly experience-based and provides a more rounded base base to looking at mixed heritages."
Balancing Two Worlds: Asian American College Students Tell Their Life Stories: Andrew Garrod, Robert Kilkenny: Books
1 recommendation
"This book isn't necessarily about being hapa, but about being of Asian descent, whether it be first generation or more. My mom doesn't talk too often about growing up in Korea, but when she does it's both intriguing and slightly uncomfortable (mainly because she discusses all the opportunities she didn't have and how she's always wanted them for me). Either way, it's interesting to know how othe..."
Half and Half: Writers on Growing Up Biracial and Bicultural
1 recommendation
"Essays seem to be the medium of choice in which hapas tend to describe their hapa-experiences eloquently. I enjoy reading them because it's rare that I actually take time out for myself to truly reflect on my unique heritage, and interesting to see what I agree/don't agree with as well as just reading about other experiences."
Shark Dialogues: Kiana Davenport
1 recommendation
"I can't believe I haven't recommended this book yet! It's a wonderful book that I first read in high school about a Hawaiian family that has been split apart and gone through much more tragedy/drama than most. There's also references to hapa-ness. It's a beautifully written novel that explores the bonds of motherhood, Hawai'i, and more amongst the 5 main women in the novel."
Korean Dumplings 'Mandu'
1 recommendation
"Mandu is actually similar to pierogi. It's a boiled dumping. Generally the ones I ate have meat and some other mixings. They're simple and yummy. I particularly like them with hot sauce."

Pierogi
1 recommendation
"These are boiled dumplings. The ones I grew up eating were filled with meat and came with bacon and sour cream as toppings. They are extremely delicious and there are many other variations on what goes into and onto them ranging from sauerkrat to jalapenos (American version) and more."
Flag of Poland
1 recommendation
"Like I said, I'm part Polish. That's where I get my fair skin that burns oh so easily and the last name ending with '-ski.' I actually don't know too much about Polish culture other than having eaten pierogi growing up. Someday, I hope to go to Poland with my dad to learn a little more."
Kimbap
1 recommendation
"Kimbap was always my favorite Korean food. It's similar to a sushi roll in the fact that it uses a seaweed wrap and is rolled. However, instead of fish, it can have egg, carrots, spinach, daikon, (ham if you want it), tofu, and more. It's quite yummy and very portable."

"Kip Fulbeck is a hilarious, funny, smart artist and great speaker. I saw his exhibition at JANM last year and he was a guest speaker for a program I attended. His work is intriguing and unique..."
