PETER GABRIEL: Here Comes The Flood: MP3 Downloads

"Yes, here comes the flood. Just a piano and The Gabriel. A great, gushy, reflective song by the man who puts out an album every seven years. Now that's scrutiny!"
SUFJAN STEVENS: Rake: MP3 Downloads

"This song is so good and moves me so much that i skip it whenever it comes on. And that sucks because I LIKE the song and want to hear it. I'd have to go through the troublesome task of taking out my "emotion" chip first. Sigh."
ANTONY & THE JOHNSONS: The Lake: MP3 Downloads
1 recommendation
"I own this album and I've heard this song a million times. I couldn't tell you what it's about though because every time I hear it I'm too busy picking pieces of my heart off the floor. I've said it before and I'll say it again- Antony's voice in mythical and utterly enchanting. THis is what my brother calls "sad bastard music"."
ANTONY & THE JOHNSONS Hope There's Someone: MP3 Downloads
1 recommendation
"I had the great pleasure of seeing Antony & The Johnsons perform a couple of years back. Unfortunately they played this song which I was hoping they wouldn't. Why "unfortunately", you ask? Because I cried in public, shattering my cool, calm and icy reputation. Antony's voice is mythical. It's like a fallen angel's that's been smoking and drinking too long here with us mortals. Haunting!"
To Be Of Use: MP3 Downloads: Smog

"Garrrghh. My cold heart can't take it. If you're by yourself on a rainy day, wandering the streets feeling utterly alone, don't listen to this song. It's quiet, beautiful and contemplative song."
TOM WAITS Tom Traubert's Blues (Four Sheets To The Wind In Copenhagen): MP3 Downloads
1 recommendation
"People either love or hate Tom Waits. Maybe it has to do with the fact that he sounds like he gargles shards glass every morning. This song is amazing. The contrast of his signature gravelly voice combined with this touching song is a perfect match."
BONNIE 'PRINCE BILLY – The Way: MP3 Download

"Looking for a sad ass love song? Well look no further. The master of somber, bleakness, singer/songwriter Bonnie Prince Billy has done it again. All joking aside, this song is really beautiful."
Welcome to the Cruel World: Ben Harper: Music

"It's the second album from Ben Harper and was released in the early nineties. Most of the songs on this one are significantly less recognizable than those on Fight for Your Mind. However, I think they do a beautiful job setting the stage for the subsequent album. Best tracks: waiting on an angel, mama's got a girlfriend now"
Antony and the Johnsons: I Am a Bird Now

"WARNING: This is a beautifully enchanting album oozing with melancholy and despair. Do not listen to this album if you are depressed. Having said that, this album is incredibly. Favorite Tracks: "Hope There's Someone", "You Are My Sister", "Bird Gehrl" Guest artists include, Rufus Wainwright and Boy George."
The Violet Hour - The Clientele
1 recommendation
"Yes, another recommendation for The Clientele! Released in 2003, this album is a continuation of the moody, melancholy dream pop seen in their eps, culminating in this first full-length album. Truly beautiful, the soft delivery of Alasdair MacLean combined with the gentle melodies make 'The Violet Hour' a prime soundtrack for looking out a window and doing some people-watching with a glass of Sc..."
Holiday - The Magnetic Fields
1 recommendation
"I'm very fond of The Magnetic Fields, and this particular release has some of my favourite songs, and the album is fantastic as a whole. Stephin Merritt's talent truly shines in the arrangement and his deep voice resonating in many of the songs. Originally released in 1994, this is a reissue from Merge Records, and a great way to acquaint yourself with The Magnetic Fields before splurging on '..."
Pet Grief - The Radio Dept.
1 recommendation
"The Radio Dept. is a band I found out about through the 'Marie Antoinette' soundtrack, and I was able to listen to more of their shoegaze (or is it "newgaze"?) sounds online thanks to Last.fm. 'Pet Grief' is a wonderful, moody little album that combines a little bit of new wave with shoegaze, indie rock and dream pop in a tidy package courtesy of Sweden's Labrador Records, and probably the mo..."
Sleepwalk and Other Stories by Adrian Tomine
1 recommendation
"I only just bought this yesterday, but I know I will be reading this slim volume for years to come. Adrian Tomine is an amazing storyteller, utilising both his artwork in creating pictorial characters and settings, and his perfect use of dialogue, and knowing when silence is the best means of expression. The short segments in this book are delicate and poignant in relaying moments that happen ..."
Songs III: Bird On the Water - Marissa Nadler
1 recommendation
"Marissa Nadler's haunting and melancholy voice reaches at your heartstrings with this one. A magnificent talent, Nadler has crafted a stunning album based predominantly on her lovely music and guitar-playing, with the help of a little reverb and other touches here and there. Songs III: Bird On the Water is an album you'll want to listen to when you're alone and thoughtful, perhaps on a long ..."
Hallelujah: MP3 Downloads: Jeff Buckley

"Just downloaded this myself. You may have first heard this on the soundtrack of Shrek. Jeff has a wonderful voice. I like the "live in concert" versions better but whether you choose the album cut or live, its a winner."
Surburban Light - The Clientele
1 recommendation
"A collection of earlier singles, Suburban Light, released in 2001, showcases the lonesome dream-pop works from British band The Clientele. In comparison to their later releases, this collection is a bit more lo-fi and the melodies are sweet, melancholy and ever-so-lovely. The soft voice of Alasdair Maclean is best played loud. Perfect for those who like to walk in the rain, linger next to a w..."
Control (2007) DVD

"For his directorial debut, Anton Corbijn (famous photographer/video director for U2 and Depeche Mode, among others) gives an intimate look on Ian Curtis, Joy Division's frontman, who tragically died at age 23. Luckily Corbijn didn't based his movie entirely on Deborah Curtis' book - or else this would have been a very negative portrait - but asked his friends/relatives, including his belgian mistr..."
Tom Waits - Closing Time

"I used to hit repeat on this CD a lot rainy days. I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You, is beautiful and heartbreaking. Tom Waits is a great actor and singer/songwriter."

"My favorite Everything But The Girl era on one album, lots of bitter relationship stuff here, also a lot of hope, love honesty, lies, and heartfelt emotions infused with a DJ edge that I still love to revisit."
Red House Painters - Ocean Beach

"Mysterious and lamentful, that's how the cover image of Red House Painters "Ocean Beach" feels. I discovered this album while living in San Francisco where dating strait women was already a thing of the past. Thanks to the songs on "Ocean Beach" I had a soundtrack for my foggy love life by the sea."

"...because many of the best Cure songs are b-sides, in pre-download days these rare and b-side tracks were difficult to find, and because of there is a great version of "Purple Haze" on this collection."
2001: A Space Odyssey - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1996 Reissue)

"Ear expanding music from a mind altering film. This is the soundtrack that introduced me to contemporary composer Gyorgy Liget, I am forever grateful that MGM and Stanley Kubrick made such brilliant and influential choices when defining the soundscape for "2001: A Space Odyssey""
Way to Blue: An Introduction to Nick Drake

"It's my favorite bicycle album, tender, sweet and a little melancholy, perfect for Spring and Fall and maybe a trip to the snow. "Way To Blue..." has many of Nick Drakes master works, my favorite at the moment--"One Of These Things First" File under breezy ^_^"
Out of Season ~ Rustin Man, Beth Gibbons
1 recommendation
"Debut solo album from Portishead vocalist, in collaboration with Talk Talk man Paul Webb (alias Rustin Man). Eschewing Portishead's lush orchestrations for a sparse, bare production, this is a collection of quiet, acoustic folk and jazz balladry which showcases Gibbons's versatile voice. Features additional production and guitar work by her Portishead colleague Adrian Utley. Lee Harris & Simon Edw..."
The Good, the Bad & the Queen

"A love affair with the beguiling city of London, an awesome mix of musicianship, songwriting, art, literature, history and healthy doses of romanticism and cockiness. Allow me to gush for a moment about this band. The Good, The Bad and The Queen have a roster and collective history to make your mouth water and your heart race (especially if you're a music junkie and Anglophile like me) - Simon ..."
