The Years of Cristobal Balenciaga 1918 saw the founding of Cristobal Balenciaga’s first haute couture house in San Sébastian, Spain. Local admiration for his designs was so strong that a second haute couture house was opened in Madrid and a third in Barcelona. In 1937, 10, Avenue George V became the Parisian home of Cristobal Balenciaga’s creative influence. Balenciaga’s Paris flagship store is still located at this address. Balenciaga soon came to embody Parisian elegance. Cristobal Balenciaga was hailed as ‘The Couturier of Couturiers’ and ‘The Master of us all’’ by designer Christian Dior. In 1946, the House of Balenciaga launched its first perfume, ‘Le Dix’, aptly named after its first atelier, 10, Avenue George V. ‘Le Dix’ attracted the same acclaim as the famous Balenciaga couture pieces, and the perfume soon even rivalled that of Coco Chanel herself. In 1968, Balenciaga closed his couture house, to the deep dismay of his favourite clients. Countess Mona Bismarck lamented the event by locking herself indoors for three days. Transitional Times Cristobal Balenciaga died in his home country of Spain in 1972. His nephews then took the helm of the business. In 1978, control of the House of Balenciaga, including the important fragrance business, passed to Hoechst and then to Groupe Jacques Bogart in 1986. In 1995, Nicolas Ghesquière was hired by the House, initially as a designer for the licensed products activity. He became creative director for the House’s own ready-to-wear and accessories collection in 1997. Balenciaga Today In 2001, Gucci Group, in partnership with Nicolas Ghesquière as creative director, acquired the House of Balenciaga, now well on its way towards recreating the influence and respect that the house commanded in its former heydays. Today, the House of Balenciaga creates women’s and men’s ready-to-wear, shoes and accessories, sold worldwide.

The XLR-v is Cadillac's supercharged performance version of the cutting-edge XLR GT car. Built on the "drivable chassis" tube-frame architecture it shares with the 6th generation Corvette, this entry in the "SL" class of retracting hardtop luxury GT cars tilts to the more sporting side of that equation and delivers a distinctly more tossable and dynamic experience than the squishy Lexus SC and the dreadnaught Chris Farley-esque Mercedes SL. The tube-frame and structural center tunnel architecture of the XLR/XLR-v combined with advanced SMC body panels result in a relatively lightweight and strong car that undercuts the porky Mercedes SL/SL-AMG by about a quarter ton! Now, how do you feel about a same-function car carrying around an extra 500 pounds of useless bulk everywhere it goes? The Stealth Fighter Caddy's adjustable suspension can coddle you when negotiating potholes and firm up stiff in the open twisties. Every other car juxtaposed within sight of it looks immediately dated and tired. With 443 hp and 414 lb/ft of torque moving 3810 pounds through GM's new double-clutch 6 speed intelligent (and shiftable) automatic, the XLR-v gets out of its own way effortlessly. That missing 500 pounds relative to the Mercedes is evident in every turn of the wheel. And when the top is down, the world is right even on your worst day. Run-flat tires keep you out of trouble. At a steady 80mph, I can hit 25mpg. A full tank of city streets and jammed freeways averaging under 25mph will put mileage in the teens. Perhaps a motorcycle for those days? The XLR-v interior is lean, tasteful, clean and uncluttered. I like its straightforwardness. Cadillac's technology integration is best-in-class, with everything accessible with little or no fuss. Nothing esoteric to learn. Very exclusive -- Cadillac will make fewer than 1000 Vs per year. The engine is thoroughly re-engineered from the base Northstar V8, and comprised of comprehensively upgraded componentry. These engines are hand-assembled racing-engine-style, each by a single builder. Made, of course, in the USA.

At the very end of Falk Miksa, on the corner of Szent István Korut (Saint Stephen Boulevard) in Budapest, Hungary, you will find BÁV, a 230-year-old, three-story, state-owned consignment store with many a high-end buying opportunity. This is where down-at-the-heels aristocrats or local gentry, fed up with their heavy Hungarian heirlooms, offer those treasures at irresistible prices. Recently on view were a French secretary with inlaid mother of pearl for less than $2,000, a 1950s Venetian chandelier for under $500 and, for a song, several antique crystal chandeliers.

While I have owned two Banana Republic argyle v-neck sweaters, I am adding this sweater as it is the updated version. I have been sporting the argyle sweaters and socks for the past two years, and it's about time fashion caugt up with me. It is nice to see that argyle has made a comeback. The sweater has a comfortable cut and is very warm. From the Banana Republic site: The classic argyle sweater has just been reinvented. The reverse knit on the front offers a modern edge to the traditional pattern. The fabric is so supple and cozy, you can layer it over almost any shirt in your closet. * V-neck. * 2 x 2 rib finish at collar, cuffs, and hem. * Fully fashioned for a clean drape. * 80% Merino wool, 10% Angora, 10% Cashmere.

I'd try it with a metallic gold clutch and gold strappy sandals for a fun holiday party look.

Set in 1920's New York City, this movie tells the story of idealistic young playwright David Shayne. Producer Julian Marx finally finds funding for the project from gangster Nick Valenti. The catch is that Nick's girl friend Olive Neal gets the part of a psychiatrist, and Olive is a bimbo who could never pass for a psychiatrist as well as being a dreadful actress. Agreeing to this first compromise is the first step to Broadway's complete seduction of David, who neglects longtime girl friend Ellen. Meanwhile David puts up with Warner Purcell, the leading man who is a compulsive eater, Helen Sinclair, the grand dame who wants her part jazzed up, and Cheech, Olive's interfering hitman / bodyguard. Eventually, the playwright must decide whether art or life is more important. This wonderful film stars John Cusack as David Shayne, Dianne Wiest as Helen Sinclair, Jennifer Tilly as Olive Neal, Chazz Palminteri as Cheech and Mary-Louise Parker as Ellen. This is one of my favorite comedy by one of my favorite director, Woody Allen. It is brilliant, witty, clever, hilarious and sinister all at once. A great, great movie.
