The Block is the first snowboarder themed hotel I've seen - and it's really well done. They basically took a plain motel, put modern furniture in, added HDTVs, PS2s, computer/iPod stereo hookups, and hip-hop music for the courtyard. Nice service touches include free DVD and video game rentals (2 at a time), free beer (Pabst Blue Ribbon when I was there - limit 2 per person), and free grill food if you're there at the right time. It's a bit more expensive than a plain motel, but they make you feel like a VIP. A great alternative to the more traditional hotels in Big Bear - check it out even if you aren't a snowboarder!

Ben Walker is an up and coming artist from N. California that everyone will know about one day, so why not be the first to sport one of his T's? Ben Walker's Armed Bear T's have some of his best designs printed in small batches on women's American Apparel T's so they are super soft and have a great cut. The world would be a better place if the bears had the guns like they do on these great shirts!

Moorish-style Malibu tile was commonly used in Los Angeles public buildings and Beverly Hills mansions until the renowned Malibu Potteries burned down in 1932. Sixty years later, Sean McLean discovered a small studio of artists still making the tiles, and in 1993, he set up California Pottery and Tile Works to breathe life back into the dying art form. Now 70 employees produce the bas-relief tiles inside a 20,000-square-foot factory. In addition to original replications, California Pottery and Tile Works produces Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Celtic motifs, as well as custom designs. For residences, these colorful, hand-glazed tiles have been used for pools, fountains and murals.

Nothing like having a job and some money. Back in the day, I would ride bearings till they stopped moving. These days I can pay the $32.00 for a great set of high quality Swiss bearings from Bones. The bearings are super smooth and don't slow down what so ever. I think I may have actually been going up hill without even push'n.

The Aromatherapy Microwaveable Lavender Bear from MindfulToys.com is probably made for little kids, but I don't care. You stick him in the microwave and he gets all warm and cozy, and the lavender, lemon balm, rosebud, hyssop, and other herbs inside release their soothing scents to make you sleep better. Kind of weird, but it totally works.

    • Anita

I use the California Cookbook at least once a month, mostly for recipes that are a little too West Coast-centric for Joy and the other oldies, but too old-fashioned or boring for Epicurious. Browsing through this collection of 650+ recipes from the paper’s archives, it doesn’t take long to stumble across dishes from one-time celebrities — Mahalia Jackson, Lawrence Welk, Polly Bergen — and popular restaurants of yore. (Remember The Velvet Turtle? The Hungry Tiger?) Each recipe has a little piece of marginalia that introduces its source, adding a bit of backstory and flair.

This 'novelty' lamp really looks like an actual gummi bear, but don't eat it! The colors are true to the candy and the price is actually digestible. Great gift for the holidays for that relative with the sweet tooth! As cute on as it is off. Buy them in all colors and create a candyland of your own!
