Famed for their high-concept catwalk shows and extravagant collections, the radical Dutch design duo Viktor & Rolf have taken the fashion world by storm over the last 15 years. This sumptuously produced book is the most comprehensive exploration of Viktor & Rolf’s work to date, and includes an essay by the fashion historian Caroline Evans, an interview with the designers, a detailed biography and perceptive texts on each collection. Particular attention is given to signature looks from such collections as Atomic Bomb and Russian Doll, which showcase the duo’s unique blend of cool irony and surreal beauty. Featuring style shots by some of the world’s most celebrated photographers, catwalk images, behind-the-scenes snapshots and portraits, The House of Viktor & Rolf is a stunning tribute to two of the most original designers in haute couture.

One of my favorite tables is the Facet cocktail table by Gary Hutton, a designer here in San Francisco. It's large enough to set a drink on, and with a top made of Swarovski crystals, it's like a little jewel sitting next to the sofa.

  • Clipso Design: Custom wall art Clipso Design: Custom wall art - Photo

    Shop for it at:

    Recommendation:

    • Chris

Clipso Design, a Swiss company that entered the U.S. market last fall, caters to individual creativity by transferring client-specified images onto a stretchable fabric. Just give Clipso a 300-dpi image or choose from its gallery of works by contributing fine artists, photographers and designers. Clipso will then produce the fabric in 16-foot-wide sections, at an unlimited length. By the end of 2006, the company plans to have showrooms and installation teams in most major markets; it already offers full installation and training packages for residential and commercial applications. Perhaps the best part? There is no paint or plaster byproducts, which means your space stays free of dust and debris.

Besides its bracing Venetian red lacquer, this Newell Design table has one other strong decorative element: a grid of mother-of-pearl dots on the recessed top. Such pearlescent details recur in the studio’s new collection.

    Recommendation:

The forward-thinkers at Bernhardt Design Press are smart enough to look out behind. Thus was born their Art Center College of Design Collection, crafted by students from the renowned Los Angeles art school. The Edge chair by industrial-design student Justin Porcano is all cushioned angles: upholstered leather or fabric cushions atop a wide, slant-legged, solid walnut shell. Back and seat cushions extend slightly past the edge of the frame (particularly kind to the back of the knee), perhaps the detail for which the chair is named. May you find one in the next waiting room. Also in white or sky blue.

    Recommendation:

    • Chris

Artisan Celeste Coughlin’s Asterisk Designs interior wall-finish studio is based in Brooklyn, but her heart is in Venice. She has updated traditional Venetian plaster with texture and pattern: Asterisk craftspeople etch patterns directly into dry plaster to make a linear contour drawing, or apply plaster through a hand-cut stencil to create a bas relief. Commissioned to design finishes for Peter Marino for Chanel’s New York flagship, Coughlin was then asked to re-create the same finishes for a boutique in Japan. In response, she developed a method of silk-screening the plaster onto wallpaper, which she now sells in addition to her custom plaster services.
