Michael Charles - Designers of Custom Homes, Interiors and Furniture
Shop for it at:
Recommendation:
-
After years of working as a computer programmer in New York City, Michael Charles allowed his love of handcrafted furniture to change his life. In 1993, he packed up, moved to Lenox, MA, and taught himself how to make furniture using age-old joinery techniques, wide-board construction and wood-color-and-grain matching. His expertly crafted furniture is traditional by design, but all pieces are made to order and can be fully customized. Charles also accepts commissions.

Charles H. Beckley

Recommendation:

Shortly after the Great Depression hit, merchant marine Charles H. Beckley purchased the O.D. Baker Company in Boston, keeping it afloat with a West Point contract. Decades later, the company is now run by Beckleyâs two great-nephews, Tim and Ted Marschke, and specializes in hand-stitched mattresses made on the factoryâs original machines. Filler options include horsehair (the best seller), cotton and synthetic fibers. Every mattress is made to order, and dimensions can be customized. If desired, Beckley will cover a mattress and box spring in a customerâs own material. Available through Beckleyâs Manhattan showroom. Trade only.

Charles Shackleton

Recommendation:
-
In a lovely old post-and-beam former wool mill in south-central Vermont, Charles Shackleton crafts furniture out of native hardwoods, while Miranda Thomas creates pottery. All their designs are contemporary interpretations of classic pieces, and all their pieces are signed. Shackleton and Thomas say theyâre leading precisely the life they visualized in art school and feel stronger than ever that handcrafting imparts "soul" to their works. "Thatâs what gives an object value and human meaning in a big, insecure, technical world," says Shackleton.

Charles Rupert

The colors of early wools, silks and cottons were, naturally, limited to the vegetable and other dyes available at the time, and many of todayâs re-creators of old textiles prefer to offer those old hues. This means that if you want to hide a TV set under a baize cloth (the way they once covered dining room tables and budgies), you might be limited to the very few colors once used. Charles Rupert, for example, which also sells reproductions of William Morris and Voysey prints, imports traditional baize from England and has it in the traditional dark green (think billiard tables), burgundy, navy and red.

I've always been a fan of Nestlé Crunch but long ago outgrew the cloying sweetness and, frankly, chemical-laden taste of Hershey-bar chocolate. Charles chocolates are slightly bitter, which I adore, and they offer such fun flavor selections. Also, prettiest packaging ever.

Gaslight (1944)
Shop for it at:
Recommendation:
-
Beautiful and trusting, Paula Anton is slowly tormented by mysterious happenings in her luxurious Victorian home. The suspect is her devoted husband. But viewing the world through the dim glow of the gaslight, it is difficult to tell what is real and what is imagined. The film stars Charles Boyer as Gregory Anton, Ingrid Bergman as Paula Alquist Anton, Joseph Cotten as Brian Cameron, Dame May Whitty as Miss Bessie Thwaites and Angela Lansbury as Nancy Oliver. Gaslight is an extraordinary film, generating its suspense not from an evil lurking in the shadows, but from the psychology of the mind itself. Perhaps one of the first "pure" psychological thrillers, Gaslight, just like Ingrid Bergman's eyes, contains the perfect blend of mystery, suspense, and beauty. An absolute must-see!
