In the days before cellphones and iPods the best thing we could come up with to to guilt our parents into buying us was a Swiss Army knife. And not just any little pocket knife, we needed the one with the saw blades, magnifying glass, toothpick, dowser's wand...all that stuff. How could we live without it?! This is the tool we can't live without now. Everything you could need in a kitchen, at a campsite, on a picnic, at a tailgate party: knife, fork, spoon, bottle opener, corkscrew. It's stainless steel and separates into two pieces for easy handling. Measures 4" x 1".

  • Sabercut Saw - Duluth Trading Company Sabercut Saw - Duluth Trading Company - Photo

    Recommendation:

    • Sumphull

Probably the most useful tool you can have when camping or in an outdoor emergency situation is a simple saw that will cut wood fast. Axes are nice but they are big and not as effective as this saw. This thing will cut wood fast from any angle. You can sling it over a branch and just pull back and forth a couple of times. Works much faster and easier than an axe. It is small too and folds up into a pouch or plastic container. Get one of these for your outdoor adventures and you will find it is very useful.

Base has been a Miami mainstay for 12 years and features a changing assortment of artisan-made home furnishings and ethnic crafts and accessories. Store owner Steven Giles, a self-described hunter-gatherer, traveled to Africa for the first time as a dancer with the Béjart Ballet and remains fascinated by the storytelling quality of native crafts. Several years ago, Giles saw a beaded chair made by the Yoruba, an ancient people who live primarily in Nigeria, and he couldn’t get it out of his mind. He finally caught up with a supply festooned with colorful depictions of animals and finished in cowrie shells, and recently offered them for sale.

A documentary on kids who attend a summer camp hoping to become the next Billy Graham. This film takes us into the inner workings of the Christian conservative movement and their near militant beliefs. The Children in the film are very likable, but the film rather cleverly and without commentary showcases the manipulation of their innocence by their church, their parents, and the surrounding community to create a new army of believers and "world changers". All of which serves as an eerie reminder of just how easily the human mind is broken, than molded into whatever it is a preacher, government or president wishes to do with. I am interested in seeing this movie.

Perfect for Halloween! Scott Saw makes beautiful, slightly dark and twisted art. You can loose yourself in the little worlds he creates. This book contains 27 paintings he did in 2004 as part of his Curtains series, subtitled: "The Wonders of Life and the Mysteries of Death". Yes, there be monsters here, as well as hearts, androids and skeletons, but they aren't scary, or gory. There's a warmth here, and maybe a bit of humor, but no spooks.
