Talk about over the top. The Caboche suspension lamp is a riveted and riveting constellation of half-spheres orbiting a single, sunny halogen bulb. Invisibly clipped to one another and apparently free-floating, the transparent balls are formed of hyper-clear acrylic (specifically, polymethylmetacrylate), a material purer than glass and far lighter in weight. The latest ingenious creation of industrial designers Patricia Urquiola and Eliana Gerotto for Milan’s Foscarini, this oblate spheroid illuminates the four directions. Concentric rings of transparent mini-globes amplify the brightness of the lone light source. A white matte glass disk at top permits light to reflect off the ceiling, while within, a milky screen of the same material shields the bulb and prevents "dazzling," the disconcerting experience of blinding light--thus making the lamp ideal for the honored place above the dining table. The lantern hangs on three taut wires at a maximum length of 79 inches; two slackened wires convey electricity and an extra measure of drama.

With the UnderCover lamp, Le Klint has found a remedy for the same-old-lampshade dilemma. Ludvigsen’s acrylic shade is actually two-in-one: an acrylic outer shade that protects a changeable inner shade. That decorative skin is available in five collections, including Doodle Dot, Marimekko—florals by designers Maija and Kristin Isola, and solid colors. UnderCover makes your fluctuating preference an accessory—and changing trends a cinch. Shades come in diameters of 13 inches or 17 inches.

The almost imperceptible profile of Lightyears’ Mondrian lamp, designed by Cecilie Manz, is executed in steel bar and pipe. A molded acrylic collar prevents glare. And a ring, also acrylic, illuminates when the light is on, indicating directions in which the spot can be trained—180 degrees horizontally and 335 degrees vertically, thanks to a ball joint. Also in floor, table, pendant and sconce versions. Available in lacquered white.

By Martin Eidelberg, Alice Cooney Frelinghuysen, Nancy A. McClelland, Lars Rachen. Vendome Press, $75 Covering not just lighting but also dead flowers and zoological photographs, glassmaking tools and original documents, The Lamps of Louis Comfort Tiffany is the first book in several years dedicated exclusively to Tiffany. Four scholars elucidate the luminary’s personal studies in lighting, explain the significance of nature in his eyes, and provide a detailed account of what went on in his workshop (perhaps the first book to examine the techniques behind the lamps). In addition to the well researched text, the book includes a beautiful four-color catalog of rare and newly photographed lamps divided into five categories: Trees and Shrubs, Vines, Flowers, Wetlands and Fauna. Each entry explores the cultural and stylistic influences, techniques, colorways and intended uses for the shade and lamp. This superb book is not only nutrition for the Tiffany flock but also a conversion text for even the most devout modernist.
