It was 30 years ago that master carpenter and builder George Goodwin first procured some local river-recovered heart pine and realized that old-growth hardwood of rare quality lay perfectly preserved in southern riverbeds. He went straight into the business of retrieving and remilling it. The dark waters of Floridaâs fabled Suwannee River, for 200 years a main artery for the relentless traffic of southern hardwood logs (90 million acres of longleaf pine decimated to only 10,000 now fiercely protected acres) has been the Goodwin Heart Pine mother lode of slow-growth wood. Itâs mostly heart pine, which once framed four of every five houses in the Carolinas, and bald cypress, a favorite of Frank Lloyd Wright. Most recovered logs are hundreds, even thousands, of years old, rock-hard, with grain, color and strength impossible to replicate (Goodwin follows grading rules issued in 1904!) To extend the usefulness of these rare materials the company now offers engineered heart pine to meet the rising demand for flooring for houses built on concrete slab. "The biggest logjam in US history closed 125 miles of the Red River in Texas in the 1840s," Goodwin says. "It took the Army and all the dynamite they could muster over two years to break it up. So thereâs a lot of wood in our rivers. It seems the longer Iâm in business, the more I hear about. But the Suwannee glut is about done." He has a two- to three-year supply in the company holding pond.
