Sara bengur's interiors always have a touch of the exotic, and perhaps John Robshaw's fabrics deserve some of the credit. Every yard of the cotton-linen and cotton-voile patterns in his current collection is hand-blocked and hand-printed in Jaipur, India. And whether they are paisley, stripe, or graphic, they always add flair and an air of unexpected lushness. Robshaw's patterns are obsolutely original but still play well w/others.

You shouldn't skimp on linens in guest rooms, and you should also make sure comfort is instilled in the design. I use Mediterranean colors to give this feeling. A good example is this John Robshaw linen.

The eponymous founder of John Canning Painting and Conservation Studios has been responsible for noteworthy projects such as the gilding restoration at Radio City Music Hall and the restoration of the Grand Central Terminal Sky Mural. While working on the train station’s vaulted constellations, Canning’s artists discovered notes, messages and signatures of the workers who reinstated the mural in 1944. True to his preservationist discipline, Canning left the early artisans’ messages untouched. The Canning studio is also equipped to do faux painting (e.g. marbling and wood-graining), trompe l’oeil and ornamental plasterwork for both residential and commercial spaces.

John Houshmand, noted musician, sculptor and builder, has now turned his creative eye to furniture. He mixes large pieces of American hardwoods with glass and steel to produce sophisticated, entirely handcrafted designs. The woods come from his farm in New York’s Catskills region and from sources across the country, but he has also been known to use trees that have fallen by the roadside and are headed for the dump. "We leave crumbly bark on and welcome wormholes," he says. "The idea is to fuse the basic elements of nature with timeless materials and an esoteric design sensibility."

Besides the intimate little stores with their troves of treasures, the Chestnut Hill neighborhood in Philadelphia boasts a collection of grand design spaces. John Alexander, for example, occupies a gray stone building that sits squat on a side street. The imposing façade gives way to a loftlike interior filled with natural light and a preeminent collection of British Arts and Crafts furnishings and decorative arts.
