By Raul A. Barreneche
Phaidon Press, $69.95 Of the piles of books out there on modern houses, only a few are worth adding to your own stacks. This handsome volume, the third in a series, is not only beautifully designed and informatively photographed but also packed with such compelling and innovative houses that even a starchy traditionalist won’t be able to resist the pull from one page to the next. Who wouldn’t be awed by a formal dining room that features retractable glass walls designed to provide a natural extension out onto a center courtyard? Whether it’s a straw bale beauty in London, a guest tree house in the mountains of Georgia, a weathering steel structure in Toronto or a picture-window house in Japan, every single one of the 33 designs included here is sympathetic to the topography and climate of its site—that’s a feat for both the author and the lucky inhabitants of forward-looking houses.

Started in 2000 as a website, Velocity Art and Design morphed into a store in 2003 and is now the ideal setting for all things modern in design. Located in the Belltown district of Seattle, here you’ll come upon all the regulars: Akari lights by Isamu Noguchi, rugs by Angela Adams, pillows by Thomas Paul, vinyl floor coverings by Chilewich, bedding by Dwell, as well as more unusual and one-of-a-kind pieces by contemporary artists. The front section of the store is a gallery with exhibitions that rotate every six to eight weeks. But don’t forget Velocity’s roots; you can find most of store’s items for sale on its website, www.velocityartanddesign.com.

Moderne Gallery presents another excellent selection, mostly from the first half of the twentieth century. A wood carving of a worker, in WPA style, was particularly eye-catching, though it played second fiddle to a large exhibition of work by master mid-century furniture designer George Nakashima, who worked nearby, just outside New Hope, Pennsylvania.

Imagine building a family home on a 220-square-foot lot, or splitting your bathroom into three sections so there is no need for a second privy. The Modern Japanese Home by Naomi Pollock explores the very subject, looking at how to build in a compact city with unique zoning laws, exorbitant costs, size restrictions and a changing social dynamic. Taking us from the “Multigeneration House” to the “Vacation House,” Pollock illustrates, through text and fantastic images, how Japanese architects such as Shuhei Endo, Jun Aoki and Hiroshi Nakao have built some of the most efficient, innovative and multifunctional contemporary homes in the world—despite the limitations. Featuring everything from sliding partitions to doggy cafés, this book opens one’s eyes to compact, luxurious living unlike any the Western world has experienced.

By Jerryll Habegger and Joseph H. Osman W. W. Norton $89.95 Like the two previous editions, the latest Sourcebook of Modern Furniture by Jerryll Habegger and Joseph H. Osman is filled with all facets of technologically innovative furniture from Gebrüder Thonet to Zaha Hadid. But this third edition offers the splendid and lively allure of color images. As the saying goes, third time’s a charm. Each of the 2,000 images is categorized by furniture type, year (in chronological order), model name or number, designer(s), manufacturer, materials and dimensions. With little text and relatively no historical information, this book is a great quick source for design professionals, furniture buyers and consumers looking for their favorite innovative and modern pieces to complete their home or office décor.

The art of lighting first inspired Jeremy Pyles as a photography student. “I learned that you can make or destroy an object with light,” he says. Ten years later, Pyles, cofounder of Niche Modern, creates the illuminating objects that make spaces exquisite. The company’s eight pendants, as well as its Trumpette table lamp, can be ordered on Niche’s website, where precisely shot images show off each piece’s warm modernism, text conveys the inspiration behind the merchandise and web surfers get to choose the color of their purchases. Just one forewarning: Part of the appeal of these hand-blown glass lighting fixtures is the uniqueness of hand-blowing, so what you see online is not exactly what you get.

what becomes a contemporary house most? According to Will Jones, the author of this mind-opening volume, the most successful homes are built as the result of synergy, not only between designer and client but also in relation to conditions, materials, the environment, budget and aesthetics. Forty different houses, varying as widely in design as in location—the Growing House in Ethiopia and the Vertical House in Los Angeles, for example—are presented here in color photos, plans and drawings that invite readers to consider design possibilities despite, or because of, the challenges they might face. The arid strip of land on which sits the Casa Equis in Peru inspired an artificial beach bordered by a swimming pool. Steve’s Retreat, a charming cabin built on top of a four-story warehouse smack in the middle of London, is a budget-minded solution to city living. Whether you’re in the market for a “new modern” house or just mad for architecture, Jones’ book will get your wheels turning.

A gorgeous prefab freestanding home addition by a modern architect for much less money than building it on your own. I love it because it is prefab, and because it creates an extra room without having to remodel the whole house. I love the clean, mid century modern design details like the clerestory windows. My fantasy is to have one in my future backyard for an office / studio/ yoga/ play / work space. Modernshed was the inspiration for Velocity to collaborate with the architect to design its “little brother”, the Modern Playshed. Owner Ben Soleimani and designer Kerry Joyce launched Mansour Modern earlier this year. Joyce’s designs range from Deco to Hollywood Regency. Furthermore, clients have the option of customizing colors, fibers and dimensions. The Satori pattern featured here juxtaposes the lush glow of silk fibers against the organic texture of wool.
