Khet / Deflexion Laser Game

Recommendation:

It's cool, because it has lasers. It's fun because this game combines geometric thinking, tactics, and strategy and many unexpected move opportunities taking advantage of your own and your opponents pieces. My son has pointed out quite a few parallels between the tactics of Deflexion and the tactics of chess including: pins, forks, interposition, and discovered attacks. We are just scratching the surface of figuring out longer term strategies and defense, and our games usually end in a surprise win, which for now just adds to the suspense and fun.

Perplex City - Trading Card Game
Shop for it at:
Recommendation:
-
This trading card game has you solve puzzles (one per card) of varying degress of difficulty. The cards are graphically interesting and the on-line integration gives it a competitive aspect. I have seen many of the puzzles before and I am somewhat annoyed about the "rare" card aspect of any trading card system -- but I am really looking forward to playing this with my 8 and 10 year old boys. We have only opened two packs, but so far so fun.

TIPOVER Crate Game
Shop for it at:
Recommendation:
-
I guess toys must sell better if you call them a "game" instead of a "puzzle". TIPOVER is really a series of puzzles that can entertain a single person for quite a while, or you can work together to try to solve them. If you follow the challenge cards in sequence starting with the easiest, they do a great job of letting you discover the principles of the various solution tactics and use these patterns in progressively harder and more complex puzzles. TIPOVER is challenging for adults and kids enjoy solving the easier levels and may surprise you with how far they get on the tougher ones. Check out the sample puzzles online to see if you like the general principle, but it's definitely nice to have the physical "crates" to tip over. This can easily fit in your game closet and can be pulled out when you have puzzle loving friends over. This page has some bonus challenges you can download and print: http://tipover-challenges.notlong.com

Five State Rummy Game Cards
Shop for it at:
Recommendation:
-
Though it is obviously intended as an educational game Five State Rummy is also a fun diversion. There's a little strategy involved and a lot of luck, and you will learn things about the geographic relationships of the US states that you didn't know before. The cards have facts printed on them like the state capital, bird, flower, etc, but we generally don't pay much attention to those. You could probably tweak the rules a bit to reinforce any of those facts that you wanted the kids to learn (e.g., require saying the state capital out loud when discarding a card). .

Guitar Hero: Computer & Video Games (PS2)

My friend Jason brought this over the other night, and we were immediately hooked. If you like classic rock, heavy metal, or alternative, the music alone almost justifies the price. My only problem was that I played so much my wrist got sore. The toy guitar controller is included with the game.

Board games are great for children of all ages. Most of them work on skills required for their classroom education such as fine motor, visual motor, visual perceptual, and motor planning. Plus they are a lot of fun. Check out games such as Jenga, Twister, Ants in the Pants, Memory, and Thin Ice.

Impressionist Art Game

Recommendation:
-
My eight year old told me I had to post about this game because they have it at his school and it's "really cool." Basically, kids have the chance to learn about art while playing the classic card games "Go Fish" and "Concentration." The game has won numerous education and publishing awards -- and no wonder. The game is beautifully designed and the concept is really innovative.

Ravensburger Scotland Yard Game
Shop for it at:
Recommendation:
-
Scotland Yard is one of my favorite games. I was introduced to it by friends when I was staying on their farm years ago. My kids love it, too, even though they aren't quite old enough to play yet. Here's how it works: One player is Mr. X and the rest are agents from Scotland Yard. Mr. X tries to avoid capture in London and is invisible except for when he must reveal himself at 3 points in the game. All players can move by taxi, bus or subway but the agents have a limited number of each and Mr. X has some secret ways to move. If you like games, you will love Scotland Yard. If you have a game night with friends, this is the perfect game to add to your group.

Tantrix discovery game pack

I have the smaller version of this game, which contains only 10 pieces. While it's a fun mind-twister the first time through, it doesn't have a lot of replay value. On the other hand, it's fun to watch your coworkers puzzle through it. I'm not sure what's included in the larger version of the game. The instructions for the small version say you can add more sets to increase the difficulty level.
