Kevin Kelly, a founding editor of Wired, wrote this seminal book 11 years ago and it still remains one of the most forward-looking and world-altering books I have ever read. Kelly brilliantly explains the then leading edge thinking behind complexity science and applied adaptive systems theory using references to Borges, chameleons caught between mirrors, and group intelligence. The core Big Idea: More is Different, not just more of the same. What he means there is that when you have lots and lots of things interacting, you tend to get unexpected- or emergent- behavior. This emergent behavior, Kelly argues, is the basis for life, civilization, and consciousness. While many of his ideas and insights have popped up in watered down ways in the mainstream pop and biz press, as well as on the Net, if you really want to understand the origins of much applied systems theory w/out having to wade thru dense math, I recommend Out of Control.

At first glance I thought "The Limits of Control" to be in homage of Jean-Pierre Melville's "Le Samourai", but then it is also possibly a art house re-imagining of James Bond seen through a post modern lends. Still, in a more subtle way "The Limits of Control" might be a tripped out political journey nodding and winking to films like Michelangelo Antonioni's Zabriskie Point, but this time under the influence of a Bush administration hangover. Or is it a sly satire on Manga? Remote Viewing? Or all of the above? Whatever it is about, Jim Jarmusch did make sure to fill the screen with many of my favorite actors, including an irresistible Paz de la Huerta (as Nude), whose character seems to be drawn from Dorothy Parker's famous quote; "Men seldom make passes at girls who wear glasses." Oh, and the soundtrack is magnetic, featuring Carmen Linares, Boris, Sunn O))), The Black Angels, Ensemble Villa Musica, Michio Kurihara, LCD Soundsystem and Manuel el Sevillano.

Book description: "High school isnt what it used to be. With record numbers of students competing fiercely to get into college, schools are no longer primarily places of learning. Theyre dog-eat-dog battlegrounds in which kids must set aside interests and passions in order to strategize over how to game the system. In this increasingly stressful environment, kids arent defined by their character or hunger for knowledge, but by often arbitrary scores and statistics." "In The Overachievers, journalist Alexandra Robbins delivers a poignant, funny, riveting narrative that explores how our high-stakes educational culture has spiraled out of control. During the year of her ten-year reunion, Robbins returns to her high school, where she follows students. Robbins tackles hard-hitting issues such as the student and teacher cheating epidemic, over-testing, sports rage, the black market for study drugs, and a college admissions process so cutthroat that some students are driven to depression and suicide because of a B. " I appreciated Robbins style of using real student's stories and backing them up with expert opinion, studies, and facts. Unforntunately, following a group of students' stories from beginning to end slowed the book down. I would have preferred a few stories about each student as a real world example of stress, pressure, suicide, crazy parents, kindergarten admissions, and so on. Maybe too much detail was too much of a good thing. Still it's a good read for any parent of a future high schooler, especially one considering applying for an Ivy League (or West Coast equivalent) school.

Medusa used her mesmerizing looks to capture the hearts of admirers, toyed with their fantasies. . .and then turned them into stone. Versace's tribute to the mythological character morphs into this metallic eye-catcher, rightly named the Snap Out of It Bag. Decked out in a geometric jacquard-embossed pattern and Medusa emblems, this isn't one for the average garden party. A mirrored nameplate and gold accents offer additional opportunities to dazzle and gleam. Careful there.
