Now that Joseph Jeup owns some CNC (computerized numerically controlled) machines, he can think increasingly about making more of his sculptural furniture designs. Freed from all that hand-hewing, this master of veneers may now focus his attention even more closely on hand-wrought finishes. Successful mass-produced items must widely suit, and the low-slung angle and open back to the Riparo chair have been carefully engineered for the comfort of tall and small alike. In two wood species--Santos Rosewood and Walnut--and twelve finishes. Trade only.

In Baker’s new Jacques Garcia Collection, created by the internationally renowned interior designer, all the pieces are classically designed (Garcia says he found inspiration in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century French furniture) yet possess a fashionable edge. One standout is this elegant stool, wrapped in leather, trimmed with French polished nail heads and available in three colors (red, black or brown).

After years of working as a computer programmer in New York City, Michael Charles allowed his love of handcrafted furniture to change his life. In 1993, he packed up, moved to Lenox, MA, and taught himself how to make furniture using age-old joinery techniques, wide-board construction and wood-color-and-grain matching. His expertly crafted furniture is traditional by design, but all pieces are made to order and can be fully customized. Charles also accepts commissions.

Sixteen years ago, Maine Cottage founders Peter and Carol Bass sensed a need in the marketplace for colorful well-made furniture. "Peter and Carol saw brightly painted furniture in magazines and figured out that those pieces were found objects painted for the photo shoots," says David Petersen, Maine Cottage’s VP and general manager. "There was no place to buy the pieces, so they set out to manufacture real furniture with simple architectural lines in fun colors." The Yarmouth, ME, company offers complete customization of its wooden pieces and 40 paint colors; they will also work with custom colors. All dimensions can be changed, and wooden accent pieces and knobs can be interchanged. Limited customization of colors and fabrics is available for their upholstered and wicker furniture. Maine Cottage furniture is sold through showrooms across the country.

The name might suggest a lumbering old fogey, but the British company Gus* Furniture designs and produces ultra modern lighting. These freestanding and ceiling-suspended pieces are encased in light-diffusing plastic, which transform the geometrc forms into glowing monoliths with a flick of the switch. Industrial-strength touches lend a bit of muscularity to the light-softened shapes.

Designer Douglas Green creates “new furniture classics for the twenty-first century.” An inventor from a very young age, he founded Green Design Furniture Co. to continue the traditions of the Arts and Crafts movement. “Our woodworkers combine reverence for handwork with modern tools and technology,” he says. The firm produces fewer than 1,000 pieces of furniture per year, and the first 100 pieces of each new design are numbered and signed by Green and the craftsperson who made them. The company’s newest item is a cherry cabinet especially designed to hold thin-profile televisions such as flat-screens and plasmas. Furniture is sold directly from the Maine showroom or online.

It would be a challenge to find a man who has more fun than Mike Heltzer. He makes elegant, award-winning furniture, lives and works in a renovated boatyard along the Chicago River, and restores and redesigns yachts. "It’s hard to believe how unconventional my life is now, considering I was originally an attorney with a big Chicago law firm," he laughs. Heltzer Furniture marries modern technology and hand-crafting in designs that integrate metals, textiles, stone and wood. Each piece is finished to enhance, both aesthetically and structurally, its natural characteristics. Collections are available through interior designers and architects.

Diane Ross’s voice lilts when she talks about her life on a Montana ranch. "I climb trees, ride horses and build good furniture," she says. "I’m so lucky." Her business, Rustic Furniture, was launched when she needed money for college. After reading an article about bent willow chairs, she made some and then sold them at a crafts fair. She got her degree in range science and soil (she calls it "grass and dirt"), but it’s with her rustic wood furniture that she has made her mark. Except for pieces she crafts for juried shows such as the Western Design conferences, she works strictly on commission.

Designers Michelle Johnson and Jason Martin admire the classicism of modern American furniture, but when they designed their own collection of chairs, tables and upholstered pieces, they combined that look with the simplicity of organic silhouettes. "We pared down American modern to its most basic form, or silhouette," explains Martin. "That’s why our company name is Silho Furniture." The light-as-air furnishings are sold exclusively through the firm’s Los Angeles showroom. The partnership also includes interior design and is sought after for custom furnishings.

At Planet Furniture, designer Ross Longmuir both minds the shop and creates some of the striking pieces available for purchase. Longmuir’s streamlined chests, nightstands and stereo storage units are constructed of spotted gum, a local hardwood, that is peeled into 3-millimeter layers and crossbanded into boards. The technique combines the strength and weather-resistance of MDF but not its crumbly veneer; the resulting caramel-colored furniture is as sturdy as solid wood and will develop a rich patina over time. Planet Furniture lovingly showcases its wares with artwork, ceramics and even stuffed animals in studied vignettes.

Atmosphere is one of the US firms that has its high-quality custom designs manufactured in Brazil; Shelly Baduay, who heads the Los Angeles–based company, calls it a symbiotic arrangement. “We work only with wood certified by the Brazilian government,” she says. “That means we never use any tree until it has completed its life cycle, and we’re proud to be able to produce 300 pieces of furniture from a single tree. It also means that it may well be five more years before we receive another such specimen of a particular tree.”

By Jerryll Habegger and Joseph H. Osman W. W. Norton $89.95 Like the two previous editions, the latest Sourcebook of Modern Furniture by Jerryll Habegger and Joseph H. Osman is filled with all facets of technologically innovative furniture from Gebrüder Thonet to Zaha Hadid. But this third edition offers the splendid and lively allure of color images. As the saying goes, third time’s a charm. Each of the 2,000 images is categorized by furniture type, year (in chronological order), model name or number, designer(s), manufacturer, materials and dimensions. With little text and relatively no historical information, this book is a great quick source for design professionals, furniture buyers and consumers looking for their favorite innovative and modern pieces to complete their home or office décor.

Carlo Mollino was one of the most inspired architects and designers of the 20th century, but never the subject of a solo monograph. Until now. The Furniture of Carlo Mollino features 400 sketches, drawings and photographs, many never before published. In the first of three sections, the authors examine influences on Mollino’s work: For example, he sidelined in aeronautics, automobile design, photography, set design and women’s fashion. Next, 150 glossy pages of lightly captioned images speak for themselves. A reference guide concludes with an extensive chronology of his interiors and furniture, as well as a bibliography for further exploration. Not for the lighthearted, this compre-hensive book is reserved for readers with a serious interest in the history of design and the making of a legend.
