I'm always interested in plant vessels, and I generally prefer containers that allow the plant to show off, without cluttering it with a lot of redundant man made decoration. This usually means a simple, clear, glass container - even better with transparent dirt! ($10 at Day-lab) Note: An easily-maintained live plant can be a nice alternative to cut flowers that die within a week (especially for girls who tend to overthink). Although, those girls (whoever they are) may PREFER cut flowers because then when the plants die, it's not a reflection on their nurturing abilities.

The Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab is pretty much where it's at for offbeat, custom, and rare scented oils and perfumes. The best part of browsing the site is reading the titles of all their alchemical masterpieces, names awash with glamour, good taste and more literary, sci-fi, and comic references than you can shake a swizzlestick at. A few other collection titles you might like? Neil Gaiman, The Mad Tea Party, Ars Draconis, Picnic In Arkham, and Carnival Diabolique. Yes, they are awesome. Why did I choose the Rappaccini's Garden collection of scents as my standout favorite, when in fact I have yet to purchase an item from it? I recommend it based on the store's reputation, the care to form and function they pay in their art, the fact that all the scents in the collection are named for poisons, and because the short story it's aptly named for, "Rappaccini's Daughter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is freaking hot. Don't believe me? Read it, seriously. Hot. PS? This is where the people you've envied on the street and at dorky gatherings who wear union style shirts that say "Alchemists' Local" are buying those. Just to let you know. That's right, I say it loud, the genius team behind the BPAL truly rules.

By Wendy Hitchmough. V & A Publications, $24.95 “The house as a work of art, perfectly harmonious in its relationship with nature, was designed to have an improving effect upon the spirit as well as the lifestyle of the client,” writes art historian Wendy Hitchmough in this well-illus-trated and informative book tracing the Arts & Crafts movement from its main inspiration—the garden. Design reform at the turn of the twentieth century mirrored political and social changes of the day. In reaction to the Industrial Revolution, for example, pioneers of the Arts and Craft movement such as John Ruskin, William Morris and C. F. A. Voysey pushed for the need to get back to nature. As she guides us through the “almost wild plantings” that resulted from the movement’s desire to smudge the lines between outdoors and in, Hitch mough, curator of the Charleston, the famous Bloomsbury artists’ Sussex home, also provides an illumin-ating history of architecture, furniture and textiles. Color plates, historic black-and-white photographs and drawings of gardens in Britain, Europe and the US show readers the profound influence of Arts and Crafts on the gardens of our time.

I love Mecox Gardens. It’s owned by a guy named Mack Hoag, and he started this business called Mecox Gardens in Bridgehampton, New York, and it still exists. He’s got a store in Palm Beach, one in New York City on Lexington, and he recently opened one out here in Los Angeles. It’s an interior shop that have a lot of new merchandise versus antiques, and it’s more mass market, which is fine. It’s a great store. I do a lot of business there.

"The Constant Gardener" jjuggles three film styles—the romance, the thriller, and provocative social realism. On all three levels, the film succeeds, especially with the latter. The strands of thriller and social realism are inextricably tied together in the film. As a whodunit, "The Constant Gardener" seeks to uncover what actually happened to Justin (Ralph Fiennes) and Tessa (Rachel Weisz) on their African journey. At the same time, the main culprit that emerges is the heavy hand of greed as the pharmaceutical companies exploit helpless victims of tuberculosis for the purpose of testing and marketing an experimental drug. At one point in the film, it is disclosed to Justin that the pharmaceutical industry is no different than "arms dealers." A must-see!

This store has the coolest stuff for gardens -- really unique fountains and pots and fire pits and planters. Vintage and eco-friendly stuff, too. The "Garden Tarts" that run it have amazing taste -- this place is like Anthropologie meets Smith and Hawken. The best stuff is the original designs of the tables, pavers, and pots. Check it out!
