There are a host of reasons to not eat meat or dairy, but some of the most compelling involve thinking about just how resource-intensive cattle farming and the like really are. Eating vegan has nothing to do with self-denial -- eating locally grown, fresh produce, grains, and sauces make for some of the most delicious, nourishing meals you can eat, with a substantially smaller "water footprint" than what we leave behind by eating animals and animal products. Whether or not you're a committed vegan, the recipes featured in The New Vegan Cookbook are adaptable enough to fit in just about anywhere in your diet.

The beauty of the "dining scene" in LA isn't the handful of "starred" restaurants fronted by celebrity chefs. Those are much better had in cities like Chicago, New York, and San Francisco. No, the beauty of the LA dining scene is really the patchwork of neighborhoods that, when taken from a food perspective, are really defined by ethnic cuisines. East LA is Mexican. Further East is Chinese. There are pockets of Japanese in downtown and West LA. For Vietnamese food, LA has Little Saigon in the Garden Grove and Westminster area. Ann Le has put together a cookbook that is based out of this region of LA.

it's a NY institution and now a chain with locations across the country, but it IS in LA "This 1920s Italian-American steakhouse which has now expanded to almost 30 locations throughout the country is a New York City institution, and this cookbook by Binns (Polenta) celebrates its "virtually unchanged" menu. Indeed, the recipes are hearty and rich, and hark back to the days of Prohibition, when Americans indulged themselves in the pleasures of fine dining. The book begins, appropriately, with such libations as the Famous McClure Cocktail, a combination of gin, brandy, Curaeao and apricot liqueur. Appetizers include Shrimp Bruno (battered and fried with a Dijon sauce) and Grilled Beefsteak Salad with Gorgonzola, Arugula and Radicchio. The book offers a large selection of old-style Italian-American dishes, but it would not be complete without the specialty, the New York Strip Steak"

A great cookbook for beginners or experienced cooks. Let me make a disclaimer, PLEASE do not blame me if you put on a few pounds making dishes from this cookbook. Paula Deen does not follow the current trend, she does not believe in low fat or small portions. However, one constant with this cookbook is great tasting food. The self proclaimed southern belle surely knows how to throw down in the kitchen and her recipes are delicious!

Reading this book is like taking a trip through time. Start back in the fifties, then watch the recipes evolve into quicker and more modern creations. The Bake-Off Contest has changed quite a bit over the years. While today's recipes are certainly quick and easy and appeal to today's mindset of wanting to throw something together quickly, some of the older recipes are top-drawer drawer classics. Whether you are a "quick and easy" enthusiast or someone who prefers to do everything from scratch, you will like this book for both the recipes and the glimpse into the Bake-Off contest. My personal favorite recipe is Triple Espresso Brownies.

Further proof that the location mantra means something different in Los Angeles, the city's best seafood restaurant is located at the back of an anonymous bit of concrete courtyard off Vine, just between Sunset and Hollywood. Chef David Lentz says he was inspired by clam shacks and it shows with perfect fried oysters, clam chowder with bits of chorizo and dinosaur kale and inspired fish specials. The wine list is tiny and always interesting, but it's the drinks -- fresh-squeezed in-season juices with top-shelf liquors, simple syrups and the occasional rosemary sprig -- that make The Hungry Cat worthy of canonization.
