How might a twig provide the comfort of a shade tree? Perhaps if it were photographically enlarged enough to sprawl across a king-size duvet cover. This ploy, used by Amenity Home Collection, works with dandelions and wild roses too.

This is probably the single most important tool in my kitchen as I spend many hours cutting and preparing fruits and veggies. I use Wusthof because I like their balance and weight, especially the larger knives.

It almost doesn’t matter what brand (I like both Global and Wustoff), it just needs to be perfectly sharpened and well cared for.

I have a mean set that I brought over from Switzerland many years ago. There is no perfect knife, but everyone finds the knife they love. Many US companies are now making very attractive, goodf quality forged knives for far lower prices.

Any chef will tell you that their knife is their most prized possession in their arsenal, and arguably the most coveted brand is Sabatier from France. Forged from a single piece of high quality stainless steel, these knives are heat and corrosion resistant so can even go in the dishwasher (although I don’t recommend it). If you get just one, I recommend the 8 inch, and I can’t stress enough the importance of keeping all your cutlery sharp by by taking them to get professionally sharpened on a regular basis, and running them against the steel every time you use them.

Sabatier chef’s knives. A knife is the most important tool in the kitchen. When selecting a knife, hold it and balance it. The most expensive knife might not be the best one for you. I have always loved Sabatier knives; they always felt right for me with their forged metal and clad handle.

I can't believe no one thought of this before! Put the design on the blade instead of the handle!!! These steak knives are part of the 'decor collection' by Culin Home. This pattern is 'splash' which has modern different sized circles etched into the blade. They make some other interesting patterns as well and in every type of knife from paring knives to butcher's knives. Get a set and impress your friends at your next dinner party! Stainless steel and affordable!

I actually won this gift set from coochicoos.com as part of their month of giveaways. It's for babies, but once I smelled it I decided to use it for myself. Heck, the kids don't care, they like their character-themed body wash so why waste the yummy scents of citrus, lavender and rosemary on them? But, if you are less selfish than me, it would make a super-nice baby shower gift.

These delicate bits of flotsam and jetsam remind you to take a break from your hectic schedule and let yourself dream a little dream. Canadian artisan Roisin (an Irish name meaning "Little Rose") Cadieux harvests bits of twigs, flowers and leaves and turns them into organic poetry. She uses stainless steel and/or copper wire to join the natural elements, balancing the man-made with the macrobiotic. Place it above your bed or next to your desk, then take a deep breath and let your mind wander.

    Recommendation:

    • GadgetGuy

Crayons made from twigs might seem pretty low on the gadget meter, but these things really look stylish and are functional. In fact, they've taken a twig and made it into a crayon, so in effect it has become one of nature's gadgets. I rest my case.

You might look a bit like a pirate with these on display in your kitchen, or perhaps like a crazed murderer, but these are some of the finest (and sharpest!) knives on the planet. They promise long-lasting blades that are sharper than razors. Ouch!

    Recommendation:

I don't believe in buying knives or pans in sets. You buy them as you need them. I love the weight of Wusthof knives, I keep them sharp with a stone, or sometimes use my electronic sharpener. I say go for the heaviest, biggest chef's knife you can. People are scared of big knives; they shouldn't be. A sharp heavy knife is less likely to cut you than a small one.
