Few things are as obscure and good as Vandermint: the chocolate and mint liqueur from Holland. You might not take milk glass-like bottle seriously but the contents will surpise and likely amaze. Unlike its lesser mint & chocolate counterparts this elixir is smooth, rich, creamy and alluring - all without being milky, syrupy sweet or heavy in any way. Dont be fooled, this is a serious drink with refined taste. If you want alcohol steeped candy, look elsewhere. A few sips and you'll be solving the world's problems from your sofa throne in no time at all.

It sounds like it's related to those fake-red cherries you get in bad manhattans, but this brandy-like liqueur is made from Italian Marasca cherries... and tastes like nuts and fruit. It's a key ingredient in classic cocktails like the Aviation and The Last Word.

More than anything, I love the Belle Époque bottle and the fact that the liqueur is made from something so special and rare: elderflowers, which are picked by hand just a few days a year in the French Alps then transported by bicycle to the old-fashioned alembic stills of the St-Germain distillery. The liqueur is only 40 proof, so it's fine to pour over rocks and enjoy the pear-meets-lemon flavor and fragrance.

A piece in Jolene Thym's Picky Eater column has me intrigued. One of the things I miss most about living in Northern California is the unique offerings from small wineries and distillers. Thym recently received a sample of Crispin's Rose Liqueur, created by Crispin Cain of Greenway Distillers. The distillier ferments apple juice and honey and then distills it to create an eau de vie which they then infuse with roses. Thym describes the taste as " like being in a small room stuffed with roses." Oh my! The unique beverage is only available at one place online and sells for $85 for a 375-ml bottle. This just made my Christmas list. It would likely be a great bottle to bring for dessert, perhaps paired with baklava or something else light and yet decadent.

I first heard about this liqueur from Vincenzo Marianella at Copa d'Oro. He was going to use it to make this cocktail made with Sazerac Rye, Carpano Antica Sweet Vermouth, Lemon Bitters and this dark chocolate liqueur. Unfortunately he hasn't been able to get his hands on a bottle of this stuff and I've been longing for this cocktail ever since. I like how it's described as a blend of dark chocolate and vanilla without being cloyingly sweet.
