Joker.com is not quite as cheap as GoDaddy for domain registration, but you don't have to wade through as many pages trying to upsell you to other services. And, they're located in Germany/Switzerland (as if that had anything to do with anything in the Internet age). UPDATE: Since I wrote this review I have discovered Dotster.com and am in the process of switching all of my domains to Dotster. It is more expensive than Joker, but it is easier to register and maintain domains in bulk and Dotster offers whois privacy (for an additional fee). I would still recommend Joker if you're looking for simple, cheap domain registration.

When planning the guest bedroom for the owners of a log-and-stone home in the Colorado Rockies, Vail-based designer Melissa Greenauer wanted to create a cozy seating area where visitors could relax, read and soak up the spectacular mountain views. She turned—as she often does—to 1stdibs.com, a designer’s dream resource of antique- and contemporary-furniture dealers in markets from Paris to Los Angeles. Launched by Web entrepreneur Michael Bruno in 2001, the site features seating, lighting, tables, mirrors and other furnishings that are high-end and unique, says Greenauer. Prices are negotiable, she adds, and most designers purchase directly from dealers. For her clients’ guest bedroom, she found two Art Deco chairs with soft rolled arms, a pair of Murano glass sconces and pendant fixtures that lend the space the warm, inviting look she was after. Visitors to the jam-packed site can search for furnishings by city, country of origin, century, dealer, category, designer or price, then store items for purchase in a virtual stockroom. New items are posted every Wednesday.

bursting with vibrant mid-century colors and shapes, gomod.com is an entertaining, near-endless resource for buying modern design. The clickthrough “Mod Picks” directs you to sites selling top-of-the-line furnishing and accessories. Or select “Go Shop” and end up at themagazine.info, one of the Internet’s leading modern furniture stores. But the site is more than a mere fill-your-cart conundrum. “Mod Bytes” is a curious section filled with trivia bits, and “Mod Haps” keeps you up to date with a monthly calendar of events and their links. You can even search for your dream home via “Mod Homes,” which lists an assortment of websites, properties and real estate agents. Browse the site’s bookshop, which reviews publications and links to Amazon.com for purchases. “Shops” provides an alphabetical listing of online stores with links for instant purchase power. And if you actually feel like stepping away from the computer, enter your zip code under “Store Locator” and a list of nearby stores and addresses is at your disposal.

Only in an extreme metropolis like Manhattan can you find vintage stores that contain more treasures than bores. “We never know what will show up—an Andy Warhol print, a beautiful Deco vanity, or a huge bust of Elvis Presley,” says Emily Hull-Martin, director of visuals for Housing Works, Inc., the nation’s largest minority-controlled AIDS service non-profit. Housing Works Thrift Stores may be Manhattanites’ most beloved vintage chain. Proceeds go to the organization’s good cause, sure, but hipsters truly love the store windows, which are some of the most creative in the city. The components of these vignettes are auctioned off, and now, with housingworksauctions.com, you can do your guilt-free bidding from home. Once logged on to the site, click a scene and the contents are broken down individually. Each item has several alternate photos, a detailed description (including an honest assessment of abnormalities) and the current bid status. If you’re looking for a certain something, you also have the option to shop by category. All shipping costs are the buyer’s expense, and out-of-towners beware—items must be removed from the store within 48 hours of sale.

emusic.com is by far my favorite MP3 download site for music. You must be a member, but let me tell you... Being a paying member has giving me joy since 2000. The site has continually been adding new artists and labels. I have spent outrageous amounts of time searching through the massive music catalog looking for that one gem. I actually have upgraded my account several times and have continually purchases what they call "Booster Packs" so I could keep downloading music. A large majority of my favorite record labels (Om, Ubiquity, Epitaph, and Global Underground) are on emusic.com. I honestly can't say enough great things about this site, and I don't think I need to since I have been a paying member since 2000. Some of my favorite artists available on emusic: 808 State Aloe Blacc Angela Bofil Apples In Stereo Bad Religion Pennywise J. Boogie's Dubtronic Science Quantic J. Rawls Omega Whatts Breakstra Billie Holiday DJ Krush Faruk Green Kaskade Layo & Bushwacka! Meat Beat Manifesto Moby Modest Mouse The list can go on and on and on...

Audible.com is a great resource for "books on tape" (for lack of a better term). I use Audible mostly for business and non-fiction books as they don't require much imagination. For fiction books, I tend to read them as I like to use my imagination while I read. Audible has plans that start at $9.95 on up to $22.95. Audible is actually a good deal when you consider you might pay over $20.00 for a new book at a traditional brick and mortar store, when you can actually get the book from Audible for around $15.00.
