I'm not really a pen geek. I don't remember my pens and pencils by model name or make suggestions to friends. I don't read pen blogs (my guess is they're out there) or press releases from OfficeMax. However, because JetPens.com is such a cool and easy to browse site, AND because my handwriting resembles a chicken's scrawl, except that the chicken in question is either severely arthritic and/or somewhat demented - I often, perhaps vainly, search for a new pen or pencil that will make my scribbling just a wee bit more legible. Well, I haven't found one yet, but I did find a pretty cool pencil. I long ago chose mechanical pencils for their crisp lines and paper feel, no sharpening needed approach, and the fact that I could erase on the fly (a really useful feature when your instructor tells you to 'forget the last 5 minutes'.) Oh yes, the review. the Uni-ball Kuru Toga line takes a really, really unheard of problem and fixes it. See, before I found this pencil, I was simply UNWARE that mechanical pencils were flawed. Every time you write, you dull the led, and usually in the same direction you're writing in. This leads to uneven lines, 'catches' on paper, and worst of all, broken leads (you know that annoying 'clicking' sound in class? That's me with my broken lead pencil.) Apparently, in Japan, they have pencil engineers. Someone at Uni-ball took it upon themselves to solve this problem, and they did! A fascinating, geared mechanism inside the clear plastic grip (you can watch it in action) rotates the lead a teeny amount every time you lift the pencil from the page, ensuring even wear and straight, uniform lines. Best of all, it makes it much harder to break the lead - so I'm not spending so much time in class clicking during tests. It really does work, and it's about $6 - not bad for a reusable device. I like the bright orange color, but it comes in a nice palette of neon styles. It's also available in 5 or 3 mm widths. My new, regular pencil. Ok, reading over this post, maybe I am a pencil geek.

[UPDATE: Flashlight technology has made dramatic progress since this review was originally written. You can get better, cheaper LED torches today.] Blinding white light (120 lumens) in a compact hand-held torch. If you're going to spend over $100 on a small flashlight, this is it. Warning: They claim the LED bulb can't be broken if you drop it, but I dropped it on concrete and *something* broke. If you're going to spend over $100 on a flashlight, don't drop it.

For some reason, I thought Jar was going to be stuffy, subdued, and sort of "old," even though reviewers have called it a "clubby" atmosphere. I was totally right -- it IS stuffy -- but for some reason, subdued totally works. It is not necessarily quiet, but there is a sort of calm energy in the air. The space is open, but small, and feels comfortable. The food is my favorite kind, all-American flavors, but with fresh and new ingredients, techniques, and presentation (which isn't at all too-presh or over-the-top). The meats from the grill are very well done, but my favorite dish of the evening had to have been the braised pork belly. Fatty pork drowning in its own liquid fat? Yes. Desserts did not impress, but I forgive them. PORK BELLY! One of these days, I will go for Mozzarella Mondays with Nancy Silverton (if they're still doing it, that is)

  • Gustto Large Parina Bag Gustto Large Parina Bag - Photo

My Review: Yes, it's huge, but that's the most fabulous thing about it! I am about 5'3" and don't find it overwhelming at all, but I'm used to big bags, and frankly, since I'm not small, I think bigger bags just fit me better proportionately - small bags make me look bigger. I've been using it to carry my laptop (which is a clunker) recently and it's works wonderfully. The shape is perfect for holding everything you could possibly imagine without looking incredibly full (besides my laptop, I carry a long Hobo wallet, a stuffed makeupbag, a paperback, and random other things like phone/ipod/etc). The leather is moderately distressed looking, and thick. It's very sturdy leather, but not nearly as soft as Andrew Marc's. It's got several inside pockets and one outside pocket which keep everything organized, a fun mustard yellow 'Gustto' logo lining, and a silk dustbag (which will never get used). When I'm not using it to carry my laptop, I cinch the drawstrings in a bit to close it up top (like in the third picture) and give it more 'shape.' This is the only big bag I have in this lighter brown color, and I'm very pleased with it's versatility. I love to wear it with blacks and browns, but it can truly work with almost any color. Find the Gustto Parina bag at Luna Boston - and enter code 'grechen' to save 20%.

This is the softest leather EVER. My Review: I have to admit, I've never felt about a bag the way I feel about this one. Yes, I realize that's a statement usually reserved for a boyfriend or husband, but from the moment I saw (actually touched - nay, fondled) this Andrew Marc bag, I couldn't stop thinking about it; it was purse lust. And now, it's love. Okay, sorry for the x-rated introduction...but you have to see/touch it for yourself to understand. If you're familiar with Andrew Marc's leather/suede outerwear, you probably already do. The leather is the most perfect balance of thick/soft/sturdy I've ever seen; believe me when I say, you will not want to stop touching this bag. I've used it a few times in the week or so since I've received it (it rotates with the Gustto) and besides being SOOO soft and sumptuous, it's actually incredibly practical and comfortable to carry. It's not heavy, even filled with stuff, and all the outside pockets keep everything organized. Actually, it's a great bag for travel - I used it while in Florida last week to keep all my essentials close at hand. The long pockets on the side are great for sunglasses and the front 'pouch' is perfect for my camera. The inside is lined in a soft suede-like material which is almost as soft as the leather. There are several nice pockets inside as well, but honestly, if I have outside pockets, I prefer to use those for keys/phone/iPod/Camera and just keep my wallet and bigger things inside. The shoulder strap is padded for comfort, and the bag keeps it's shape even when full. Also, if you prefer a more square shape, you can unbutton the snaps on the sides of the bag that give it it's rounded shape. I prefer the hobo-look, but it will hold more unbuttoned and might even serve as an overnight bag or carry-on. Overall, this is one of the most exciting bags I've ever owned. And at $495, it's practically a steal for a well-known designer's new foray into handbag design (even the unknowns are starting to charge that much) and an even better bargain with the 20% discount code 'grechen' from Luna Boston.

I can't believe I was lucky enough to review this product! Yes, the packaging is truly modern and lovely – beautiful white square that is like a sculpture, but the performance also really impressed me. This gave me exactly what I wanted quick moisture, nice pleasant scent that is still unique, light feel on the body. Not greasy at all, this was so perfect. This product is terrific for someone who wants tons of hydration without the creamy residue left on the skin. I used this product every morning and my skin has never been softer. The smell is yummy too. Think orange groves….Brilliant luxury purchase!

Beyond Coastal Sun Care was founded by Shawn Biega, a sports enthusiast who spent a lot of time outdoors (often wearing no sun protection). According to the Beyond Coastal website, Shawn “witnessed firsthand the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation when a few friends developed skin cancer in their early 30s.” My husband is an avid cyclist, and sometimes weeks will pass before he even uses a car to commute to work. Great for the environment, yes… but his rigorous riding schedule could certainly damage his skin and heighten his risk for skin cancer. As a result I am constantly on his case about sunscreen application. I also occasionally like to use him as a guinea pig for product reviews. You can see where I’m going with this, right? After using it for a day or two, I asked him what he thought. His words to me were: “It didn’t smell bad. It went on fine.” I laughed. He then added. “What more do you want? It’s a $@x%x! sunblock.” Obviously, I would have to sample this myself to write a review. I was impressed. This SPF 30, broad-spectrum sunscreen is designed to stay on through even the most active of athletic challenges. Unlike some sunscreens, this product never ran into my eyes or irritated my sensitive skin. Beyond Coastal Active Daily Sunscreen absorbed quickly, and I was able to apply my makeup over it with no problem. My husband was perhaps unable to articulate how much he likes this product, but it quickly became the household favorite, with every member of the family using it (until it was gone)! Beyond Coastal products are all dermatologist tested, hypoallergenic, paraben-free and oil-free. Their products are manufactured to meet USA- FDA, Australian, European EEC, Japanese AND South African standards. A 4 oz. bottle sells for $15.00 on the Beyond Coastal website (shipping is free with a purchase of $25 or more- via Pay Pal), or you can check for a retailer near you.

  • Hard Candy Take Out Makeup Kit: Combination Sets Hard Candy Take Out Makeup Kit: Combination Sets - Photo

    Recommendation:

    • palacinka

OK girls --for those of you who love cute makeup packaging and also expect a quality product, Hard Candy has created the ultimate kit! I LOVE this kit and by the end of my review period, I could not pry this out of my bag! (Yes, I especially loved the adorable Chinese take out package!!!) This is super small – (1"in x 3.5"in x 2” in) and light weight to carry with me for touch ups. Now on to the actual kit contents… This very cute multi-level (3 levels) makeup palette contains 8 tiny eye shadows in various colors (Note: they are on the sparkly side), 2 concealers, a blush, a bronzer, 6 lip glosses, tiny black eyeliner and black mascara. Most of the eye shadows are very workable and flattering shades and the lip glosses are cute with many browns, reds and pink which are on the sheer/medium finish side. I found that my favorite product in this case was a total surprise -- the concealers...yes, the concealers. The coverage was fantastic and the color match was very good as well. This kit really contains everything you need to create a full face! The products also smell yummy, like sugar, the blush is a nice color, and the bronzer is also very flattering with good wear. The mascara is GREAT as well and I would use it solo. The palette itself has a cute mirror, and while the applicators are fine for on the go application, overall I found better results using my professional brushes applying it at home
